TITLE: ``Defaults Denied: A Reply to Morreau''

ABSTRACT:

I will present results established in joint work with Michael Miller, concerning the need for a more expressive default capability in commonsense reasoning, including the ability to deny defaults ("it is not the case that cardinals are typically red"). Standard formalisms do not provide this, but for reasons other than merely ones of expressive power. Our analysis of the underlying difficulty has led us to a very simple extension to standard formalisms (default logic, circumscription, etc) that remedies the problem.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
